Pavlov's Dog [1974] Pampered Menial

Pavlov's Dog
Formed 1972 In St. Louis

Biography by Stewart Mason

The artsy hard rock group Pavlov's Dog spanned progressive music and heavy metal
in much the same way that Rush did in its early days.
Also like Rush, Pavlov's Dog had a singer, David Surkamp,
whose distinctive high-pitched voice was the group's take-it-or-leave-it factor.
Outside of a small cult following, most folks chose to leave it,
but over the decades Pavlov's Dog has remained a popular find for fans of the obscure end of American arena rock.

Pavlov's Dog formed in St. Louis in 1972
out of the ashes of a local cover band called High on a Small Hill,
with Surkamp, formerly of the minor folk-rock act Touch, on vocals and guitar,
joined by lead guitarist Steve Scorfina; keyboardist David Hamilton; Mellotron and flute player Doug Rayburn; bassist Rick Stockton; drummer Mike Safron; and strings specialist Siegfried Carver (born Richard Nadler), who added violin, viola, and an odd hybrid instrument called a vitar (that sounded something like Eddie Phillips' bowed guitar in the '60s freakbeat heroes the Creation). The combination of flute, Mellotron, violin, and Scorfina's guitar heroics led to some comparisons to David Cross-era King Crimson, though Pavlov's Dog had a much more straight-ahead, less twisty sound.

Growing popularity on the Midwestern club circuit led to the band's signing to ABC-Dunhill Records in 1975 (supposedly for a then-record 650,000 dollar advance, though that might have been press-release puffery) and the recording of their debut album, Pampered Menial.
History is unclear as to exactly what happened next, but somehow, Pavlov's Dog found themselves off of ABC-Dunhill and on Columbia Records almost immediately, with the result that Pampered Menial was released twice, almost simultaneously, on two different labels with exactly the same sleeve design and track lineup.

Banyak kemiripan antara Pavlov's Dog ~ Rush saat awal, diantaranya;

David Surkamp (Vocals & Guitar), Steve Scorfina (Lead Guitar); David Hamilton (Keyboards);
Doug Rayburn (Mellotron, Flute); Rick Stockton (Bass); Mike Safron (Drum);
dan specialis strings Siegfried Carver (- Richard Nadler), yang menambahkan Violin, Viola,
dan sebuah alat Hybrid aneh yang disebut vitar.

- Julia -
{David Surkamp}

Julia you set the standards for me
Walk to your door
Beggin for it just to be more and

Julia I couldn't do much better than you
Said so yourself
I wouldn't want anyone else

And I can't live without your love
And I can't live without your love
Well I can't live without you

Julia oh you're drivin me crazy
But I'm a...I'm a part of your plans
Oh just a man while your dreams be
You're just a part of me
Oh please see how much how much you mean to me
Please see how much how much you mean to me Julia

And Julia straight away you've had me
And I know I've had you
You're a part of me too

And I can't live without your love
And I can't live without your love
Well I can't live without you Julia

- Fast Gun -
[David Surkamp]

You like to wear the fast gun
You try and make me run
When the whole town turns its troubles down on you
You like to wear your gun down low
And you kiss her when you go
Would a half breed cowboy lose her
You never know

When you shot them dressed in black
How to pull these triggers back
When it happens there's a time when it's pouring down
Will you meet me there, let's go
Better to let your feelings show
Because the fast gun's got troubles of his own

You like to wear the fast gun
You gonna try and make me run
You think you're going to shoot me down
Well you never will
'Cause they say you've got no soul
You got to hit them quite low
Would a half breed cowboy lose her
How you know, how you know, you must never know

When you shot them dressed in black
How to pull these triggers back
When it happens there's a time when it's pouring down
Will you meet me there, let's go
Better to let your feelings show
Because the fast gun's got troubles of his own

You wear the fast gun wear it low
You like to kiss her when you go
(Repeat to end)

Kayak [1999] The Singles

KAYAK
Formed - 1968
Disbanded - 1980

Biography by Paul Collins

With their instrumental prowess and keyboardist
Ton Scherpenzeel's facility at writing lyrics in English,
you might be forgiven for mistaking Kayak for a bunch of clever proggers from London.
But this Dutch band began in 1968 in the city of Hilversun,
where Schenpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman attended a music conservatory.
After the addition of guitarist Johan Slager, bassist Cees van Leeuwen, and vocalist Max Werner,
the group solidified by 1972 and commenced recording.
Stylisically they featured the instrumentation and chops of progressive acts like Yes and Genesis,  but the pop song structures of Supertramp and the Alan Parsons Project;
as time passed they increasingly favored the pop side of the equation.
Royal Bed Bouncer, the most even balance between these two styles,
was to be a commercial and artistic high point for the band.  They continued to meet with minor success throughout the seventies on a variety of record labels, and in 1974 toured in support of Queen-a move that influenced the flavor of their later work.

Like most progressive bands,
Kayak never had a terribly stable lineup;
at one point they went through three bassists in as many years.
With Scherpenzeel as the sole constant, Kayak's first lineup also proved to be their finest;
but Koopman's asthma forced him to retire in 1976,
and Werner was so tortured by stage fright and unfounded doubts over his singing ability
that he demanded the vacated drum chair for himself,
leaving the vocals duties to new member Edward Reekers.
Scherpenzeel's central role in the band eventually wore on the others,
and Kayak fell apart in 1980.
Scherpenzeel continued on to work with the English band Camel
and now composes primarily for the theatre.
Koopman and Reekers work in music production and performance;
Werner left the stage to become a postal worker,
and van Leeuwen has become-of all things -- a prominent lawyer.
The band reunited in 1997 for a Dutch TV special, though no new recordings have yet emerged.

tetapi struktur lagu mereka adalah Pop seperti Supertramp atau Alan Parson Projects.

ini lagu yang kita kenal...

Ruthless Queen
(I. Linders, T. Scherpenzeel)

With a quivering voice
You spoke the word
Shadow came between us
Sharp as a sword
Gone is my gladness
And vanished my pride
'Cause luck didn't stay on our side

Leaped in luxury
I cried for the moon
But the game is out
It all ended too soon
Awakening came as the belt from the blue
At last from a sheen to be true

CHORUS
Oh my ruthless queen
You would steal the treasure of my dream
It's the twinkle in your eyes
That took me by surprise
Oh my ruthless queen
I just can't accept our love has been

I bear you no malice
You show no remorse
Love is dead and gone
It was no endless source
Your sudden leave was the finishing stroke
Considering everything grow

CHORUS
Oh my ruthless queen
You would steal the treasure of my dream
It's the twinkle in your eyes
That took me by surprise
Oh my ruthless queen
I just can't accept our love has been

Please don't tell me you couldn't care less
Well I feel like a ship in distress

Oh my ruthless queen
I just can't accept our love has been

Procol Harum [1967] Procol Harum

Procol Harum
Formed
1967 in London, England

Biography by Bruce Eder

Procol Harum is arguably the most successful "accidental" group creation -- that is,
a band originally assembled to take advantage of the success of a record created in the studio --
in the history of progressive rock.
With "A Whiter Shade of Pale" a monster hit right out of the box,
the band evolved from a studio ensemble into a successful live act,
their music built around an eclectic mix of blues-based rock riffs and grand classical themes.
With singer/pianist Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid
providing the band's entire repertory,
their music evolved in decidedly linear fashion,
the only major surprises coming from the periodic lineup changes
that added a new instrumental voice to the proceedings.
At their most accessible, as on "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Conquistador,"
they were one of the most popular of progressive rock bands,
their singles outselling all rivals, and their most ambitious album tracks still have a strong following.

Procol Harum's roots and origins are as convoluted as its success
-- especially between 1967 and 1973 -- was pronounced.
Pianist Gary Brooker (b. May 29, 1945, Southend, Essex, England)
had formed a group at school called the Paramounts at age 14,
with guitarist Robin Trower (b. Mar. 9, 1945, Southend, Essex) and
bassist Chris Copping (b. Aug. 29, 1945 Southend, Essex),
with singer Bob Scott and
drummer Mick Brownlee.
After achieving a certain degree of success at local youth clubs and dances,
covering established rock & roll hits, Brooker took over the vocalist spot from the departed Scott, and the group continued working after its members graduated -- by 1962,
they were doing formidable (by British standards) covers of American R&B,
and got a residency at the Shades Club in Southend.

Their first recording, produced by Denny Cordell,
was of a piece of surreal Reid poetry called "A Whiter Shade Of Pale,"
which Brooker set to music loosely derived from Johann Sebastian Bach's
Air on a G String from the Suite No. 3 in D Major.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Bila ingat Procol Harum pasti ingat "Whiter Shade Of Pale".
Bach - Suite No. 3 in D Major - Air on a G String.
Namun Booker menolak hal ini.

- Whiter Shade Of Pale -
{Brooker, Fisher, Reid}

We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray

(Chorus)
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed

- 2 verse tambahan -

She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed

Procol Harum
Release , 1967 - Deram

Review by Bruce Eder

Procol Harum's self-titled, debut album bombed in England,
appearing six months after "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg" with neither hit song on it.
The LP was successful in America, where albums sold more easily,
but especially since it did include "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
and was reissued with a sticker emphasizing the presence of the original "Conquistador,"
a re-recording which became a hit in 1972.
The music is an engaging meld of psychedelic rock, blues, and classical influences,
filled with phantasmagorical lyrics,
bold (but not flashy) organ by Matthew Fisher,
and Robin Trower's most tasteful and restrained guitar.
"Conquistador," "Kaleidoscope," "A Christmas Camel,"
and the Bach-influenced "Repent Walpurgis" are superb tracks,
and "Good Captain Clack" is great, almost Kinks-like fun.
Not everything here works, but it holds up better than most psychedelic or progressive rock.

The Very Best Of Nazareth [2002]

Nazareth
Formed
1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland

 by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Scottish hard rock quartet Nazareth had a handful of hard rock hits in the late '70s,
including the proto-power ballad "Love Hurts."
Formed in 1968, the band featured
vocalist Dan McCafferty,
guitarist Manny Charlton,
bassist Pete Agnew, and
drummer Darrell Sweet.
The band had relocated to London by 1970,
and they released their self-titled debut album in 1971.
Both Nazareth and 1972's Exercises received favorable attention by British hard rockers,
but it was 1973's Razamanaz that moved them into the U.K. Top Ten
(both "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy" were hit singles).
Loud 'n' Proud and Rampant (both 1974) followed the same formula,
yet were slightly less successful.

The Best Of The Moody Blues [1997]

The Moody Blues
Formed
1964 in Birmingham, England

Biography by Bruce Eder [edited]

Although they're best known today for their lush,
lyrically and musically profound (some would say bombastic) psychedelic-era albums,
the Moody Blues started out as one of the better R&B-based combos of the British Invasion.
The group's history began in Birmingham, England with Ray Thomas (harmonica, vocals)
and Mike Pinder (keyboards, vocals), who had played together in El Riot & the Rebels and the Krew Cats. They began recruiting members of some of the best rival groups working in Birmingham, including Denny Laine (vocals, guitar), Graeme Edge (drums), and Clint Warwick (bass, vocals). The Moody Blues, as they came to be known, made their debut in Birmingham in May of 1964, and quickly earned the notice and later the services of manager Tony Secunda. A major tour was quickly booked, and the band landed an engagement at the Marquee Club, which resulted in a contract with England's Decca Records less than six months after their formation. The group's first single, "Steal Your Heart Away," released in September of 1964, didn't touch the British charts.
But their second single, "Go Now," released in November of 1964 --
a cover of a nearly identical American single by R&B singer Bessie Banks,
heavily featuring Laine's mournful lead vocal -- fulfilled every expectation and more,
reaching number one in England and earning them a berth in some of the nation's top performing venues (including the New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert, appearing with some of the top acts of the period); its number ten chart placement in America also earned them a place as a support act for the Beatles on one tour, and the release of a follow-up LP (Magnificent Moodies in England, Go Now in America) on both sides of the Atlantic.

Introduced at the start of the '60s as a potential rival to the Hammond organ,
the Mellotron had worked its way into rock music slowly, in acts such as the Graham Bond Organisation, and had emerged to some public prominence on Beatles' records such as "Strawberry Fields Forever" and, more recently, "I Am the Walrus";
during that same year, in a similar supporting capacity,
it would also turn up on the Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request.

As it happened, Pinder not only knew how to play the Mellotron,
but had also worked in the factory that built them,
which enabled him over the years to re-engineer, modify,
and customize the instruments to his specifications.
(The resulting instruments were nicknamed "Pindertrons.")

The Best Of Emerson, Lake and Palmer [1994]

Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Formed, 1970 in Bournemouth, Dorset, England
Disbanded, Dec 1978

Emerson, Lake & Palmer were progressive rock's first supergroup.
Greeted by the rock press and the public as something akin to conquering heroes,
they succeeded in broadening the audience for progressive rock
from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions of listeners,
creating a major radio phenomenon as well.
Their flamboyance on record and in the studio echoed the best work of the heavy metal bands of the era,
proving that classical rockers could compete for that arena-scale audience.
Over and above their own commercial success,
the trio also paved the way for the success of such bands as Yes,
who would become their chief rivals for much of the 1970s.

Keyboardist Keith Emerson planted the seeds of the group in late 1969
when his band the Nice shared a bill at the Fillmore West with King Crimson,
an up-and-coming band that featured lead singer and bassist Greg Lake.
Emerson and Lake first discussed the possibility of collaborating at that point,
but only after the Crimson lineup began disintegrating during their first U.S. tour
did he finally opt to leave the group (after agreeing to sing on the forthcoming Crimson album).
Upon officially teaming in 1970, Emerson and Lake auditioned several drummers,
including Mitch Mitchell, before they approached Carl Palmer,
a former member of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown
who later hooked up with bandmate Vincent Crane in an experimental band called Atomic Rooster.

The trio's first rehearsals mostly picked up from the Nice's and King Crimson's repertoires,
including such well-known numbers as "Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man."

They explored their capabilities to an extreme, even with the technology limitations of the early 70's, breaking ground, setting the new parameters for a new vein in the english pop music (at the time) which would be called progressive music.
ELP released 10 outstanding albums during the 70's,
and after a long break, they got back in the 90's with a new approach,
but still making good music.
In 1986 Cozy POWELL replaced PALMER
and they put together EMERSON, LAKE and POWELL, a good effort as well.

:::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::

sebelum akhirnya bertemu Carl Palmer (Crazy World, Atomic Rooster).
Latihan pertama mereka, membawakan lagu-lagu Nice & King Crimson,
diantaranya "Rondo" dan "21st Century Schizoid Man"'

Mereka mengexplorasi kemampuan masing-masing sampai titik extrem,
bahkan dengan keterbatasan teknologi saat itu (awal 70-an),
mereka memainkan musik baru yang nantinya disebut Progressive Music.

ELP me-release 10 album selama dekade 70-an, dan setelah cuti panjang,
mereka kembali tahun 90-an, dengan warna baru yang tetap indah.
Pada 1986, Carl Palmer digantikan oleh Cozy Powell,
mereka menjadi Emerson, Lake and Powell.

it don't mean i'm blind
perhaps there's a thing or two

i think of lying in bed
i shouldn't have said
but there it is

you see it's all clear
you were meant to be here
from the beginning

maybe i might have changed
and not been so cruel
not been such a fool
whatever was done is done
i just can't recall
it doesn't matter at all

you see it's all clear
you were meant to be here
from the beginning

atao yang ini ...

- C'Est La Vie [Lake / Sinfield] -

C'est la vie
Have your leaves all turned to brown
Will you scatter them around you
C'est la vie.

Do you love
And then how am I to know
If you don't let your love show for me
C'est la vie.

(Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Who knows, who cares for me...
C'est la vie.

In the night
Do you light a lover's fire
Do the ashes of desire for you remain.

Like the sea
There's a love too deep to show
Took a storm before my love flowed for you
C'est la vie

(Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Who knows, who cares for me...
C'est la vie.

Like a song
Out of tune and out of time
All I needed was a rhyme for you
C'est la vie.

Do you give
Do you live from day to day
Is there no song I can play for you
C'est la vie.

(Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Oh, oh, c'est la vie.
Who knows, who cares for me...
C'est la vie.

kalo yang ini inget gak ?

- Still.. You turn Me on (Lake) -

Do you want to be an angel,
Do you wanna be an angel
Do you wanna be a star
Do you wanna play some magic
On my guitar
Do you wanna be a poet
Do you wanna be my string
You could be anything

Do you wanna be the lover of another undercover
You could even be the
Man on the moon

Do you wanna be the player
Do you wanna be the string
Let me tell you something
It just don't mean a thing

You see it really doesn't matter
When you're buried in disguise
By the dark glass on your eyes
Though your flesh has crystallised
Still...you turn me on

Do you wanna be the pillow
Where I lay my head
Do you wanna be the feathers
Lying on my bed
Do you wanna be the cover
Of a magazine
Create a scene

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

Do you wanna be the singer
Do you wanna be the song
Let me tell you something
You just couldn't be more wrong

You see I really have to tell you
That it all gets so intense
From my experience
It just doesn't seem to make sense
Still...you turn me on

Sure you remember this one!

- Lucky Man [Lake] -

He had white horses
And ladies by the score
All dressed in satin
And waiting by the door

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

White lace and feathers
They made up his bed
A gold covered mattress
On which he was laid

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

He went to fight wars
For his country and his king
Of his honor and his glory
The people would sing

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

Review by Roch Parisien

Serves up a more digestible portion than the box set,
focusing mostly on key early material.
Fourteen tracks isn't skimpy in the ELP context;
"Tarkus" is represented, for instance, in all of its 20-minute glory.
The set also includes the original single version of "I Believe in Father Christmas."

Personnel:
Keith Emerson - Keyboards,
Greg Lake Guitar - (Acoustic), Bass, Guitar (Electric), Vocals
Carl Palmer - Percussion, Drums
