Janis Lyn Joplin lahir Jan 19, 1943 di Port Arthur, Texas.
Dikenal sebagai penyanyi Blues hebat tahun 60-an (dia juga Penulis & Arranger).
Dia menyanyi Blues & Folk music sejak remaja. Janis terinspirasi oleh Bessie Smith (Penyanyi Blues tahun 20-an).
Pada pertengahan tahun 60-an dia bermain bersama Jorma Kaukonen (nantinya Gitaris Jefferson Airplane).
Pada awal karir-nya dikenal sebagai Vocalis Big Brother & the Holding Company,
dia keluar akhir tahun 60-an dan memutuskan untuk ber-solo karir.
Pada Monterey Pop Festival 1967, penampilan Janis memukau dan mulai dikenal penonton
saat membawakan "Ball and Chain".
Album solo pertama, I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!,
direkam bersama Kozmic Blues Band (personilnya, Sam Andrew adalah mantan member Big brother). Sound album ini sangat Soulful dan Bluessy karena aransement-nya penuh dengan instrument horn.
Coba dengerin "Try.. (Just A Little Bit harder)"
Bertahun-tahun kehidupan pribadi Janis naik turun dengan kecanduan drug, alcohol.
Secara musikal tahun-tahun akhir kehidupannya membaik, bersama dengan Full Tilt Boogie Band (Album Pearl).
Pearl menjadi bukti bahwa Janis semakin dewasa, penampilan yang berbeda
dan dapat membawakan Blues, Soul dan Folk Rock dengan baik.
"Mercedes Benz", "Get It While You can" dan "Bobby McGee", adalah beberapa lagu terbaik Janis Joplin.
Tragisnya, Janis Joplin meninggal sebelum album Pearl di-release,
karena overdosis Heroin di Hollywood Hotel pada October 1970.
Saat "Me and Bobby McGee" dibawakan, pasti akan mengingatkan kita pada Janis Joplin!

Running 70 minutes, it is a more extensive best-of than the ten-track 1973 Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits album.
But it is denied "first pick" status because, unlike that album,
it does not contain the hit version of Joplin's only number one single, "Me and Bobby McGee."
(It does, however, contain an alternate demo version of that song.)
